BENIN CITY: The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, has said that within her first 180 days in office, the hospital has raised the bar in patient care, training and institutional excellence. She stated that each milestone recorded within the period reflects, not just institutional progress, but a steadfast commitment to the people and the many lives touched by the hospital’s services. Edo LP Denies Planned Defection to ADC, Alleges Plot to Stage Fake Collapse

Image
BENIN CITY – The Labour Party (LP) in Edo State has distanced itself from alleged plans by some individuals claiming to be its members to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, and the Secretary, Comrade Frederick Akhere, the party declared that while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to join or associate with any political party of choice, the Labour Party as an institution cannot and will not decamp to another party except through a formal and legally recognised merger. The leadership stressed that no such merger process exists between the LP and the ADC. The statement alleged that after repeated but unsuccessful attempts to persuade the party’s duly constituted State Executive Committee, Local Government Area structures and ward organs to defect, promoters of the planned move resorted to assembling a small group of individuals said not to be members of the LP. It further claimed that ...

Pipeline Contract Row: BSM Threatens Shutdown, Demands Review of Surveillance Deal

Image
Tension is mounting in Edo State as the Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) has threatened to shut down operations at the NPDC office in Benin City over what it described as the exclusion of host communities from oil facility protection arrangements. The group accused NNPC Limited of sidelining indigenous stakeholders in the award of pipeline surveillance contracts and warned that continued neglect of oil-bearing communities could trigger unrest. In a statement jointly signed by its President, Elder Comrade Curtis Eghosa Ugbo, and General Secretary, Ms Esohe Adun, BSM demanded an urgent review of the surveillance framework and called for the creation of a Special Task Force dominated by indigenes of host communities to work alongside security agencies. According to the group, those who live in and own the oil-producing communities possess deeper knowledge of the terrain and local security realities than individuals brought in from outside the state. It described the practice of...

Beyond tributes, Edo South confronts life after Charlie Tempo

Image
BY ANDY EGBON The life, politics and enduring legacy of Charles “Charlie Tempo” Idahosa took centre stage in Benin City on Thursday as family members, political associates and admirers gathered to bid farewell to a man widely regarded as one of Edo State’s most recognisable grassroots politicians.  At St. Peter’s Anglican Church, the atmosphere was reflective, yet dignified, marked by solemn hymns and tributes that painted the portrait of a political actor whose influence stretched across party lines and generations. Among those who spoke most poignantly was the Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, who described the late politician as a bridge builder and resilient leader in an era increasingly defined by intense rivalry and political fragmentation. Addressing journalists shortly after the funeral service, he said Charlie Tempo was “a bridge builder, a very resilient leader, a leader that brought all his people together for good.”  It was a description t...

BENIN CITY: Fifteen frontline health workers, including two who have died, have contracted Lassa fever in Edo State and other affected regions, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed, as the country grapples with a surge in infections during the peak transmission period. Presently, Edo joins Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Ebonyi, and Benue among states recording rising cases, with several local government areas identified as hotspots.  In Edo, hospitals in Benin City and other major towns have been placed on high alert, with enhanced screening and isolation procedures for suspected cases. Dr Jide Idris, Director-General of NCDC, said the infections and deaths underline persistent gaps in infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in health facilities, particularly in outpatient and general wards.  “Protecting our medical staff is central to sustaining outbreak response. Strict adherence to IPC practices, early detection, and coordinated state-level...
