Edo LP Denies Planned Defection to ADC, Alleges Plot to Stage Fake Collapse
BENIN CITY – The Labour Party (LP) in Edo State has distanced itself from alleged plans by some individuals claiming to be its members to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, and the Secretary,
Comrade Frederick Akhere, the party declared that while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to join or associate with any political party of choice, the Labour Party as an institution cannot and will not decamp to another party except through a formal and legally recognised merger.
The leadership stressed that no such merger process exists between the LP and the ADC.
The statement alleged that after repeated but unsuccessful attempts to persuade the party’s duly constituted State Executive Committee, Local Government Area structures and ward organs to defect, promoters of the planned move resorted to assembling a small group of individuals said not to be members of the LP.
It further claimed that commercial crowds were being mobilised for what it described as a staged and deceptive event scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
The Edo LP leadership characterised the alleged move as a desperate political plot aimed at misleading the public into believing that the party’s structure in the state had collapsed into the ADC.
The party also alleged that the planned action was intended to create a false impression before former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that certain interests still retain influence over the Labour Party’s structure in Edo State.
“We remain unequivocally committed to the success of the Labour Party in the 2027 general elections. The Labour Party will not be distracted by photo-shopped defection ceremonies, rented crowds or deceptive spectacles,” the statement added.
