Tragedy in Benin: Girl dies mysteriously in alleged 'Yahoo boy’s' home
What began as a routine Saturday in Benin City ended in horror and heartbreak, as a 23-year-old girl, Blessing Oshiomeshian, was found dead in her boyfriend’s home under disturbing and mysterious circumstances.
Her death has now sparked outrage, speculation, and a police investigation that is unravelling a web of secrets, blood, and an eerie spiritual message.
In the early hours of Sunday, 11 May 2025, Blessing's lifeless body was discovered drenched in blood in a remote house in Utesi community, off the Sapele Road bypass, the residence of her boyfriend, 24-year-old Smart Davis, who is said to be in police custody alongside his brother.
Blessing, the first daughter of her family and a humble snack vendor, was said to live with her uncle, Mr Ojo Omoregbe, at No. 35 Idumwonyi Street, Idogbo, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. Her father hails from Opoji, in Esan Central LGA.
On Saturday morning, she had finished her chores and washed her uncle’s clothes before heading out to visit Davis, according to her uncle, Ojo Omoregbe. She never returned.
By 1:00 a.m. the next day, Omoregbe’s phone rang with dread. It was Gloria John, Blessing’s close friend and neighbour, who had just received a call from Davis. His message was vague and alarming: Blessing was sick and vomiting.
Sensing something was wrong, Omoregbe called his niece repeatedly. When Davis finally picked up on the third attempt, he echoed the same claim, Blessing was unwell.
Omoregbe demanded a video call. What he saw on the screen chilled his bones, Blessing, his niece, lying unconscious, soaked in her own blood.
He rushed to gather help. With a friend and a car, he made his way to the desolate residence of Davis. There, under the cover of night, they found the young woman lifeless.
Alongside Davis and his brother, they raced her to a private hospital where a Doctors confirmed she was brought in dead.
Her body was deposited at a mortuary, and the police were swiftly informed. Detectives soon descended on the crime scene, arresting Davis and his brother, and transferring the case to the homicide department at the Edo State Police Command headquarters.
Before the police could arrive, some persons, whom Davis claimed were neighbours were seen frantically evacuating property. They were said to have fled when officers showed up.
Gloria John insisted that Blessing was perfectly healthy when she left for Davis’s house a day earlier.
Both she and Omoregbe cast doubt on Davis’s image. While Omoregbe portrayed him to have claimed to be an interior designer living in his father’s house, though a 'Yahoo boy,' Gloria said he was known in the area as a “street boy."
However , there was a new twist that trailed her death, a threatening message sent to Blessing before her death, a message laced with spiritual undertones:
"Somebody brought your name and picture to our temple...the Rituals was done before i came only to find out that you are someone i know...many people know our temple... nobody jokes with it. If it church you go meet your pastor but if it is native doctor go for spiritual cleansing and blessing...ISHALLAH"
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, told reporters that his office had not yet been officially briefed on the case.
Meanwhile, Mr Omoregbe confirmed that the police had granted permission to conduct an autopsy on Blessing’s remains which will be done on Thursday
