Oke-Oroma property owners debunk allegations, pass vote of confidence on Lands Commissioner’s team

Property owners in Oke-Oroma Community, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, have dismissed as false a publication circulating against Dr Abdul-Wasiu Oyakhire, Secretary of the committee set up by Governor Monday Okpebholo to restore properties to their rightful owners in the community.

The property owners, who expressed satisfaction with the ongoing exercise, also unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the Edo State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Hon Yakubu Musa, and members of the committee, urging them to conclude the assignment promptly.

In a joint press statement signed by Hon Ojo Collins Oghomwen, Mr Osayomwanbor Osamudiamwen and Mr Efe Kennedy Ewemade, coordinator, secretary and public relations officer respectively, and made available to journalists in Benin City on Tuesday, the group urged the public to disregard what they described as a faceless and misleading publication.

According to the statement, the report dated Tuesday, 13 January 2026, alleged that Dr Oyakhire failed to carry the Oke-Oroma community and property owners along and was acting unilaterally in executing the governor’s mandate.

The property owners described the claims as baseless, false and defamatory.

They stated that Governor Okpebholo had made it clear to them that he had no interest in lands allegedly forcefully taken from the community by the previous administration, adding that he fulfilled his promise by setting up a committee headed by the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, with Dr Oyakhire serving as secretary.

The group said the committee immediately commenced work, held meetings with relevant stakeholders and fixed dates for profiling to ensure that all affected property owners were attended to.

They added that the profiling exercise was transparent, inclusive and satisfactory, restoring hope to the people and earning appreciation from the community.

They further noted that the committee continued the exercise at its office, inviting those who could not be reached in the field to ensure no one was left out, describing the attempt to discredit Dr Oyakhire as unjustified and aimed at truncating the process.

The property owners stressed that the committee was still carrying out its assignment and remained accountable to the governor who constituted it, insisting that claims that Dr Oyakhire was acting alone were untrue.

“We are satisfied with the exercise so far and unanimously pass a vote of implicit confidence on the Commissioner for Lands and Housing and his team,” the statement said, urging the general public to disregard the publication, which they described as a deliberate attempt to delay and derail the exercise.
