NUJ Edo Chairman secures freedom for 3 inmates at Oko Correctional Centre
BENIN CITY: The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe has facilitated the release of three inmates from the Oko Correctional Service in Benin City after settling their court-imposed fines.
The beneficiaries of the gesture are Godspower Nathaniel from Nassarawa State, Francis Joshua from Ebonyi State and Ikechukwu Udu from Imo State.
The three inmates had been arrested, investigated and subsequently charged to court for various criminal offences, including buying stolen phones and stealing of electric iron.
Following the conclusion of their trials, the court found them guilty and sentenced them to various jail terms ranging from six months to one year, with option of fines.
However, their inability to pay led to their being sent to jail at the correctional centre.
Relief came their way in the spirit of the New Year when Comrade Alenkhe extend humanitarian assistance by paying the fines of the inmates, as part of his personal commitment to easing the plight of less privileged persons.
This intervention led to the recommendation of the three inmates by the authorities of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Edo State Command.
The beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude to the Alenkhe for the kind gesture, describing it as timely and life-changing.
Speaking after the release, Comrade Alenkhe said his action was driven purely by love for humanity and a desire to give others a fresh start.
He noted that although none of the beneficiaries is from Edo State, Nigerians remain one people irrespective of state of origin.
In addition to securing their release, the NUJ chairman also provided the three freed inmates with cash support for their transportation to their respective states.
