CCETC’s ctions at Ossiomo Power Plant trigger widespread power disruptions

BENIN CITY – The Ossiomo Power Plant and the communities it serves have been plunged into prolonged power outages following continued illegal interventions by the Chinese firm CCETC, in apparent defiance of court orders.

Since October 5, 2025, CCETC has been accused of forcibly disconnecting the Ossiomo 33 kV line, disrupting electricity supply to thousands of residents and businesses dependent on the plant.

The prolonged outages have reportedly caused economic losses estimated at over N1.5 billion.

CCETC, in collaboration with the FCID, Lagos, is also reported to have obtained a court order to access Ossiomo Power Plant’s accounts with Stanbic IBTC.

Observers say this move appears to contravene directives by the Federal High Court, Abuja, raising concerns about corporate misconduct and accountability.

Authorities, including the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), have reportedly extended invitations to CCETC for dialogue, which the company has so far declined.

The refusal to comply with legal processes has drawn criticism from stakeholders and community leaders, who warn that the disruption threatens not only economic activity but also public safety and community welfare.

“The ongoing actions of CCETC are affecting livelihoods and businesses. Urgent intervention is required to restore power and uphold the rule of law,” a community spokesperson said.

The Ossiomo Power Plant provides electricity to numerous households and businesses, and the prolonged outage has had a ripple effect across the local economy.

Officials and residents are calling for a thorough investigation into CCETC’s activities and for those responsible to be held accountable.
