Aiguobasinmwin Movement debunks rumoured plan to increase UNIBEN school fees

BENIN CITY – The Aiguobasinmwin Movement World-Wide has dismissed rumours alleging that the University of Benin (UNIBEN) is set to increase school fees, describing the reports as the handiwork of mischief-makers aimed at creating unnecessary panic within the university community.

In a statement issued on Friday in Benin City, President of the movement, Mr Iyamu Osaro Culture, and Secretary-General, Mr Osayuki-Osa Benson, said there was no truth in the speculation circulating on social media and other platforms.

They stated that the Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie, has neither increased school fees nor initiated any plan to do so.

According to the group, “The rumour being spread around is the handiwork of those who do not mean well for the University of Benin. We urge those formenting trouble to stay away from the institution.”

The movement commended the Vice Chancellor for what it described as significant strides since his appointment as the 11th Vice Chancellor in October 2024, noting that he has “hit the ground running with impressive initiatives.”

The group listed some of Prof. Omoregie’s achievements to include the rehabilitation of dilapidated infrastructure to create a more conducive learning environment, improvement of learning tools to strengthen academic excellence, and the employment of 500 academic and non-academic staff within one year to address manpower gaps and boost staff morale.

It added that the administration has also prioritised the welfare of both staff and students, describing the Vice Chancellor as a seasoned academic and legal expert committed to transforming the institution.

The movement urged students, staff and stakeholders to disregard the rumours and continue to support the leadership of the university.

“We will not allow the shenanigans of a few individuals to undermine the excellent performance of the current Vice Chancellor,” it said.
