UNIBEN School of Dentistry flags off free oral health outreach, opens renovated clinic
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) School of Dentistry on Wednesday commenced a free Oral Health Outreach and treatment programme tagged “Operation Know Your Oral Health Status and Take Control of Your General Health."
The programme, flagged off by Dean of the School of Dentistry and Chief Medical Director designate of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. (Mrs) Idia Ize-Iyamu, said that the event is part of events marking the 10th Distinguished Lecture Series and Annual Scientific Conference of the School of Dentistry.
The outreach, organised in collaboration with the Department of Community Dental Health, the Department of Periodontics, and the UNIBEN Health Centre Dental Unit, was accompanied by the commissioning of a newly renovated and fully equipped dental clinic on campus.
The clinic, donated by the family of late Dr. Victor Ovbiagele, a former Edo State Commissioner of Health, was remodeled in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of his passing.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu commended the visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, for investing in upgraded facilities and equipment at the institution’s health centre.
She pledged to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery by maintaining high standards, engaging skilled personnel, and adhering to best practices.
She urged UNIBEN alumni to identify and sponsor projects in the university, noting that the Ovbiagele family had “etched their name in gold” through the clinic donation.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Christopher Osubor, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, described the renovated facility as a world-class healthcare centre and lauded the School of Dentistry for extending free oral healthcare to the university community.
Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Bright Bazuaye, also expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Ize-Iyamu for including his faculty in the outreach.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Philip Ogordi, said over 150 staff and students of the Faculty of Law benefited from the exercise, which aligns with the Vice-Chancellor’s vision to promote the overall well-being of staff and students.
Speaking on behalf of the Ovbiagele family, Ohioma Ovbiagele said the project was a tribute to their father’s legacy in public health service.
Dignitaries at the event included Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Justice Roland Amaize (rtd), Dr. Dan Aigbavboa, Ven. David Egbenusi, Prof. Wilson Sadoh, Prof. Osawe Omoregie, Prof. Joan Enabulele, and Mrs. Rosemary Ovbiagele, matriarch of the Ovbiagele family.
