Alumni crucial to institutional growth — Ize-Iyamu

BENIN CITY — The Dean, School of Dentistry, University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has urged alumni to actively support the development of their alma mater as a way of giving back to society.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu made the call on Thursday in Benin while delivering the opening address at the 14th Annual Scientific Conference and 10th Distinguished Lecture Series/Alumni Reunion of the School of Dentistry.

The conference had as its theme: “Oral Health in Africa: The State of Affairs, Emerging Trends, and Future Prospects.”

She commended Distinguished Alumnus, Prof. Christopher Okunseri of Marquette University, USA, for his sustained support, and noted that alumni contributions have, within six months of her tenure, enabled the acquisition of modern dental equipment, provision of an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus, mobile dental units, books, journals, and renovations of key offices and classrooms.

The Dean also highlighted the school’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, including a free oral health outreach at the Faculty of Law on August 13, 2025, and called for increased research funding in the health sector.

She announced annual research awards, including the Prof. Obuekwe Prize ($100) for best undergraduate and postgraduate research, and the Nigerian Dental Association (NDA) Award (₦100,000) for the best dental case report.

In his remarks, Prof. Okunseri warned that oral health remains a low priority in many African countries, with half lacking formal oral health policy documents.

Dignitaries at the event included UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Christopher Osubor; Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Wilson Sadoh; and Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief Bisi Idaomi, represented by Mrs. Ihensekhien.
