The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) will honour the late Mr Bankole Balogun, pioneer General Manager of the former Bendel Broadcasting Service (BBS), with a posthumous award in recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to journalism and broadcasting in the state.

The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City, beginning at 4 p.m.

Top government officials and journalists from various media organisations across Edo State are expected to attend.

In a joint statement, NUJ Edo Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon, described Mr Balogun as a visionary broadcaster whose dedication to the industry left a lasting impact.

They praised his commitment to news research and his role in breaking major stories at BBS, noting that his work helped shape the foundations of modern journalism in the region.

His son, Barrister Oladele Bankole Balogun, who serves as the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service, will represent the Balogun family of Igarra to receive the award on his behalf.

The NUJ emphasised that the legacy of Mr Balogun remains a guiding light for the profession, and the honour serves as a celebration of his life’s work in advancing responsible and impactful journalism.
