Edo NUJ reaffirms commitment to press freedom
As the world marks the 2025 World Press Freedom Day, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has joined in global solidarity to celebrate the vital role of journalists and reaffirm its unwavering dedication to press freedom, professional ethics, and the defence of democracy.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon, the union saluted the resilience and courage of journalists in Edo State and across Nigeria who continue to uphold the tenets of responsible journalism in the face of mounting challenges.
The leadership noted that the day serves not only as a moment of celebration but also one of sober reflection and renewed commitment to the core principles of the profession.
“Journalists can only truly give their best when provided with the right atmosphere to operate, one that is free from intimidation, censorship, harassment, or fear,” the NUJ said. It stressed that press freedom is not a privilege but a necessity for democracy and development.
The council used the occasion to call on all journalists in the state to remain steadfast in upholding truth, accuracy, objectivity, and responsibility.
It emphasised that the battle against misinformation, fake news, and unethical conduct must begin from within the profession.
While underscoring the media’s role as a watchdog, the NUJ also urged practitioners to support the Edo State Government’s developmental efforts by embracing solution-driven reportage and constructive engagement, even as they continue to hold public office holders accountable.
The council reiterated its internal commitment to discipline, unity, and the professional advancement of its members, vowing to continue its advocacy for improved welfare and stronger protection of journalists’ rights.
The union paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty and called on colleagues to honour their sacrifices by standing firm in the pursuit of truth, justice, and the public interest.
