Benin Federal High Court Orders Police to Maintain Status Quo on Butchery Union Leadership, Operations
A Federal High Court sitting in Benin City has issued an order directing the Nigeria Police, Zone 5 Police Headquarters, Edo State Commissioner of Police, and Mr. Sunny Omokaro to maintain the status quo regarding the leadership and operations of the National Butchery Workers Union of Nigeria.
In the order, delivered by Hon. Justice B.O. Quadri in Suit No. FHC/B/CS/97/2024, the court also mandated the police to uphold the fundamental human rights of union members. The case was adjourned to November 26, 2024.
The court order, which was observed by journalists in Benin City, further restrains the respondents—AIG Zone 5, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State, and Mr. Sunny Omokaro—from interfering with the activities of the National Butchery Workers Union of Nigeria, including any arrests, pending the determination of the motion on notice for enforcement of fundamental rights.
