CSO Flags Integrity Issues in Edo Election, Raises Alarm Over INEC's Complicity in Result Manipulation
Yiaga Africa, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has criticized the integrity of the September 21, 2024 Edo governorship election, citing a "lack of transparency in the result collation process which led to the manipulation of results."
In a post-election statement during a media engagement in Benin City, the CSO acknowledged that key processes such as accreditation, voting, counting, and recording of results at polling units were largely in line with procedures.
However, it alleged that the collation of results was compromised by biased INEC officials, acting in conivance with other actors, which "severely undermined the overall integrity of the election."
Yiaga Africa also expressed concern over the denial of access to accredited observers and party agents at collation centers, casting doubt on the neutrality of security personnel.
"The disruption of result collation raises concerns about the effectiveness and distribution of security deployment for the election," the CSO added.
The organization called for urgent and fundamental electoral reforms to restore public confidence in the electoral process, urging political actors to change their approach to politics.
