Yiaga Africa Alleges Vote Buying by PDP, APC Agents in Edo Governorship Election
Yiaga Africa, a non-governmental organization and an election monitoring group, has reported widespread vote buying during the Edo State Governorship election held on Saturday.
According to the group, agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) were observed offering ₦10,000 to voters in exchange for votes, often in the presence of security personnel, across all three senatorial districts of the state.
The areas where this malpractice was noted, it listed to include Ikpoba Okha and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas in Edo South, Igueben and Esan West in Edo Central, as well as Owan West and Akoko Edo in Edo North.
In a mid-day situational report delivered at a press conference in Benin City, Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, Chairperson of the 2024 Edo Election Mission for Yiaga Africa, highlighted that security agents were present in 95% of the polling units where vote buying was reported.
The organization commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for swiftly arresting suspected vote buyers at polling units in Egor and Oredo local government areas.
It however urged the EFCC to expand their operations to other areas where similar incidents occurred, despite the presence of security personnel.
Yiaga Africa also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enforce strict adherence to electoral guidelines and encouraged security agencies to increase their presence in polling units and wards to prevent further compromise of the electoral process.
