UNICEF, Media Collaborate to Drive Immunization Awareness in South West

UNICEF’s South West Office, in partnership with the Oyo State Ministry of Information and Orientation, organized a one-day workshop on 'Media Orientation for HPV and Non-Polio Supplemental Immunization Integrated Activities.'
Held at Plaza De Aruna Hotel in Oyo Town on September 26, 2024, the event brought together media professionals from South West and Edo States.
UNICEF’s Social and Behavioral Change Specialist, Mrs. Aderonke Akinkola-Akinwole, highlighted the media's crucial role in educating the public about the importance of vaccines and debunking common myths.
She encouraged media outlets to collaborate with health sector partners to spread accurate information on immunizing children against life-threatening diseases that could result in disabilities if they survive.
Mrs. Akinkola-Akinwole also announced that the upcoming immunization campaign, running from October 5th to 11th, 2024, aims to reach 1,136,956 children.
Mr. Rotimi Babalola, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Oyo State Ministry of Information and Orientation, explained that the workshop was designed to strengthen the partnership between UNICEF and the media.
He urged the media to help clear misconceptions and build awareness ahead of the upcoming measles campaign.
Mr. Peter Obam, addressing the media’s role in fostering participation in immunization, stressed the need for public enlightenment programs to counteract myths, misinformation, and disinformation surrounding vaccines.
Mr. Olamide Olaoye underscored the importance of supplemental immunization activities to prevent outbreaks of deadly diseases.
Each state in the region pledged their commitment to ensuring the success of the forthcoming immunization activities.
