Edo Governorship Poll: PRP Candidate Accuses APC, PDP, LP of Vote-Buying, Electoral Fraud
The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) candidate and only female contender in the September 21 Edo governorship election, Mrs. Patience Ndidi Key, has accused the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Barr. Olumide Akpata, of securing his nomination through blatant vote-buying.
In her first official reaction to the governorship election during a press conference in Benin City, Key stated that the development makes a mockery of the democratic process and further undermines the integrity of the nation’s electoral system.
According to her, "Vote buying and selling is not just a crime; it is a deliberate act of self-sabotage."
Key emphasized that vote-buying, which she claimed was prevalent among the three major political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and LP dominated the election.
"It has dire consequences for both the state and its people," she said. "The people of Edo State have been so deeply impoverished by decades of mismanagement that many now believe selling their votes is a solution to their immediate hunger. But this practice only deepens the cycle of poverty, corruption, and underdevelopment."
She further lamented, "The election was tragically marred by manipulation, vote-buying, and outright rigging. What we witnessed was not a democratic election; it was a 'Rig, Rigger, Riggest' show of corruption and electoral malpractice that does not represent the will of the people of Edo State."
Key condemned the APC, PDP, and LP, accusing them of systematically impoverishing the state and neglecting its development.
"These parties have left us with bad roads, dilapidated schools, broken healthcare systems, and rampant unemployment."
The PRP candidate called for the people of Edo State to reject vote-buying, which she said undermines governance and development. She promised to continue the fight for a better future for Edo State, stating, "Together, we will build a state that truly serves its people."
She thanked her supporters and urged them to remain hopeful and vigilant, declaring, "The winds of change are blowing, and the people of Edo State will not be silenced forever."
