NGO Coalition Condemns Arrests, Intimidation Ahead of Edo Governorship Poll

The Conference of Non-Governmental Organisations (CONGOs) has strongly criticized the ongoing arrests and intimidation of political opponents in Edo State.

Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, the Congress President, Dr. Bartholomew Okoudo, called for an immediate halt to these actions, which he said threaten the integrity of the upcoming Edo State governorship election set for September 21, 2024.

Dr. Okoudo emphasized that the arrest and harassment of political figures undermined the democratic process and could delegitimize the election results.

He pointed out that such tactics have no place in a fair electoral system and only serve to erode public trust in the outcome.

The CONGOs leader urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, and other relevant stakeholders to address issues that could derail the electoral process in Edo State.

He warned that the use of thugs and unwarranted arrests could escalate tensions as the election date approaches, referencing recent allegations from a political party that its members have been unjustly targeted by security forces.

Dr. Okoudo further expressed concern about the broader trend of post-election disputes across Nigeria, stating that this persistent issue hampers the country's development and undermines the credibility of its electoral system.

He also criticized the pervasive nepotism in Nigeria's public institutions, which he said stems from flawed electoral processes and contributes to poor governance.

Calling for urgent action, Dr. Okoudo urged Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order the release of certain members of the Edo State Security Network who have been detained.

He also appealed to INEC to ensure that the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State is conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner.
