IPC Condemns Assaults on Journalists Amid #EndBadGovernance# Protests

As the #endbadgovernance# protests enter the third day, the International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos, has described the ongoing targeting, victimization, and assault of journalists covering the protests by security officials, hoodlums, and anti-protesters as totally appalling and unacceptable.

In a statement, IPC strongly condemns what it described as inhumane attitude towards the media and journalists performing their legitimate duties.

A statement signed by Mr. Melody Akinjiyan, the IPC Press Freedom Officer, indicated that information gathered by IPC’s Journalists’ Safety Alert Situation Room revealed a continuous increase in the attacks on journalists and media professionals.

Such attacks included physical assault, harassment, and unlawful detention.

The statement listed several incidents in FCT, Abuja:
Olukayode Jayeola, a photojournalist with The Punch Newspaper, was arrested by police officers while covering the protest at Eagle Square. His camera, phones, and other personal belongings were confiscated by security operatives. Masked security operatives also fired sporadically at journalists at the MKO Abiola National Stadium. Bullets pierced a Premium Times reporter’s car conveying journalists from The Punch, The Cable, Premium Times, and Peoples Gazette.

Borno State:
Nine staff members of Radio Ndarason Internationale were arrested by security officials in Maiduguri while reporting on the protests.

IPC believes these increasing attacks aim to deter the media from reporting the truth about the protests.

The statement noted that this disturbing trend undermines, not only the safety of the journalists, but also the integrity of the information citizens rely on to understand the full scope of the crisis.

IPC reiterates the need for the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to call their men to order, while stressing the importance of all stakeholders condemning the abuse and harassment of journalists and demanding immediate protection for those in the field.

"Our collective voice is a powerful tool for advocating for their safety and ensuring that their essential work continues unhindered. IPC will continue to call for an end to the brutality and for a renewed commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all journalists," the statement added.
