IPC Condemns Attack on Journalists During #EndBadGovernance Protests in Lagos

The International Press Centre (IPC) has condemned in strong terms, the violent attack on reporters and camera operators from News Central Television by thugs at Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, which have now entered the seventh day.

According to reports gathered by IPC’s Journalists’ Safety Alert Situation Room, the attack took place in the presence of nearby police officers who failed to intervene.

The Press Freedom Officer at IPC, Melody Akinjiyan, described the incident as alarming, particularly due to the inaction of the police.

"The thugs, numbering more than ten, descended on the News Central crew who were covering the protests.

Despite being directed by police to leave the park, the journalists moved to a distant location to continue their live broadcast.

However, during the broadcast, they were attacked by hoodlums wielding sticks and shovels," Akinjiyan stated.

The attackers assaulted several reporters, forcing them to flee the scene.

The IPC expressed grave concerns over the increasing number of assaults on journalists covering the nationwide protests.

The Centre emphasized that such attacks threaten press freedom and the safety of journalists, who are essential in keeping the public informed during significant societal events.

In response to the incident, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, has reportedly ordered an immediate investigation. According to a report published on Pulse.ng, the Commissioner has mandated his team to identify and prosecute the perpetrators. This directive was given following a formal complaint lodged by News Central’s Managing Director, Kayode Akintemi, at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

The IPC has called on the Lagos State Police Command to honor its commitment to bring the attackers to justice. The organization also urged the Commissioner to hold accountable the officers who failed to act during the assault.

The #EndBadGovernance protests have seen widespread participation across the country, drawing attention to issues of governance and accountability in Nigeria. However, the protests have also been marred by incidents of violence and attacks on both protesters and journalists, raising concerns about the protection of fundamental rights during civil unrest.
