INEC Enlists Media to Boost Voter Participation Ahead of Edo Governorship Election
With just four weeks remaining until the Edo Governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged the media to assist in mobilizing voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
During a media engagement in Benin City, INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, underscored the media's crucial role in ensuring a fair electoral process.
Olumekun, represented by Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, highlighted the media's responsibility in safeguarding the election's integrity.
"As the fourth estate of the realm, the media is not just a conveyor of information but also a vital player in the democratic process, particularly during elections. Your dedication to truth and accuracy protects voters from misleading narratives," he stated.
He announced that the distribution of PVCs commenced on August 22, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, including weekends, in all 192 wards across Edo State, continuing until August 26, 2024.
Afterward, the exercise will shift to INEC offices at the local government level from August 28 to September 8, 2024.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to ensure a free, fair, and credible election in Edo State.
The Chairman of NUJ, Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, expressed gratitude to INEC for organizing the session and urged the commission to maintain openness with journalists seeking relevant information.
