Court Dismisses Engineer’s Rights Plea in High-Profile Suicide Case
An Edo State High Court sittingvin Benin has dismissed a fundamental human rights application brought by Engineer Chukwudi Mudiaga against the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police (Zone 5), the Edo State Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies.
Mudiaga had sought to prevent his arrest or harassment by the police and DSS over allegations of aiding suicide.
The case stems from the suicide of Mrs. Lilian Omokhuale, daughter of the Managing Director of Uyi Technical Company Ltd., on October 7, 2022.
Following a thorough investigation, the police charged Mudiaga and five others with aiding the suicide due to alleged involvement in financial transactions with the deceased.
Seeking to enforce his fundamental rights, Mudiaga approached a Benin High Court. However, in his ruling, Hon. Justice Igho Braimoh dismissed the application and advised Mudiaga to face the ongoing case at the Federal High Court.
Following the ruling, Olayiwola Afolabi (SAN), counsel to Mr. Omoruyi Oloton, the Managing Director of Uyi Technical Ltd., stated that the focus would now shift to the aiding suicide case at the Federal High Court
