IPC Trains 50 Journalists for Edo Election Coverage

Ahead of the September 21, 2024 Edo governorship election, the International Press Centre (IPC) trained 50 journalists in the state on effective election coverage.

The training was at a media and election stakeholders Dialogue/Interaction on Credible Elections in Edo State.

The critical stakeholders are the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), law enforcement and security agencies, National Orientation Agency (NOA), civil society groups, media and the citizens.

The 50 journalists, consisting of both reporters and editors, were drawn from the broadcast, print, and online media that will be responsible for providing comprehensive coverage of the upcoming Edo governorship election.

The executive Director of IPC, Mr Lanre Arogundade said that the objective of the training is to ensure that all relevant stakeholders perform their duties with the desired sense of responsibility for the purpose of improving media performance.

According to him, the training is part of activities under the Component 4 (support to media) of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN) project with IPC as the lead partner.

The resource persons at the session, including the Executive Director of IPC, the Director of Journalism Clinic, Mr Taiwo Obe and Nnimmo Bassey of the Health and Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) in their various presentations expressed the need for journalists to hold political office holders accountable.

Other issues focused on by the resource persons included fact-checking, asking probing questions, doing follow up on issues reported by the media as well as the safety of journalists while on. election duty.
