Enforcement of Court Judgments Requires Proper Directives - Police Commissioner
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funso Adegboye, has stated that it is not the responsibility of the Police to enforce court judgments unless there is a directive from the appropriate authorities.
Mr. Adegboye made this known to newsmen on Friday while explaining the circumstances that led to the death of Inspector Onoh Akor during a shootout on Airport Road, Benin City, following the arrival of Comrade Philip Shaibu who was reinstated by a court few weeks after he was impeached as the state Deputy Governor by the state House of Assembly
He emphasized that there are established procedures to enforce court judgments. "Our role is to ensure the safety of the court bailiffs, who are specifically in charge of enforcing court judgments; we are still awaiting directives for the enforcement of the court order," he said.
Mr. Adegboye urged the media to help educate the public on the matter, noting that every court case must be pursued to a logical conclusion, which would simplify the job of the Police.
The Police Commissioner also appealed to political actors and stakeholders involved in the crisis, which resulted in the death of the Police Inspector, not to drag the Police into unnecessary controversy. He pointed out that the incident could have been avoided if the parties had adhered to the rules of engagement.
He further disclosed that the Police authorities have commenced an investigation into the incident and have identified some persons of interest. Those found culpable will not be spared, he added.
