Ativie Heads LP Caretaker C'ttee in Edo

The National Leadership of the Labour Party (LP) headed by Barrister Julius Abure has constituted a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the Edo State Chapter of the party.

The 17-man caretaker committee is headed by Rt.Hon Mrs Elizabeth Ativie , a former Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

The new state Executive Committee of the party was  inaugurated in Benin City by the Deputy National Chairman, Dr Ayo Olorunfemi.

Administering the oath of office on members of the new executive, Dr Olorunfemi said that the new leadership of the party in Edo state came on board following the expiration of the tenure of the Ogbaloi led executive council on April, 2024.

He said the new leadership of the party in Edo state is expected to take charge of the affairs of the party pending when a fresh congress will hold to elect a new executive in the state.

He said that the choice of  Ativie as Edo State  Chairman of LP was informed by her political pedigree.

He assured that the party would be more united in Edo State with Hon Ativie.

In his speech, the member representing Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Esosa lyawe commended  the national leadership of the party for appointing Hon Ativie as the Chairman of the caretaker committee.

He said the party is ready to go into the September 21 Governorship election in Edo State,  with Barrister Olumide Akapata as its Gubernatorial candidate.

Also speaking, the  member representing Egor/lkpoba Okha Federal Constituency , Hon. Murphy Osaro Omoruyi congratulated the new leadership of the Labour Party in the state and stressed the need to unite all aggrieved parties.

Hon Omoruyi  expressed confidence that Hon Ativie would be able to move the party forward.

Responding, the Chairman of the Labour Party in Edo state , Rt. Hon Mrs Elizabeth Ativie promised to move the party to a higher level in the state.

She promised to reconcile all aggrieved stakeholders in the Labour party and said that a reconciliation team to resolve all pending issues in the party would be set up soon.

The secretary of the Party , Hon. Oses Emmanuel Eromwonsele lauded members of the party for their turn out during the inauguration.

In line with the letter signed by the National Chairman of the Labour party , Barrister Julius Abure and made available to newsmen,  the new executive members of the party are expected to work in conjunction with the party's Governorship candidate, Barrister Olumide Akapata towards ensuring victory for the party in the September 21,  2024 governorship election.

Contacted via telephone, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi said, “We are not aware whether the Edo State Labour Party executive has been dissolved because there is a process to all of these. No one man can just wake up one day and remove a structure that has been.

“The National Working Committee of the party led then by Barr. Julius Abure reached agreement that there shall be no congress in Edo State until after the governorship election slated for 21st September, 2024; that the exco should be allowed to prosecute the state election after which congress can now be called.

“As leaders, we should be masters of our words; we should not go back from our discussion; we should not go back to any term agreement that we made.  Going by that agreement, what is the use of expediency now trying to do a caretaker committee to preside over the party for just three months?”
