Edo Assembly sacks dep governor, Philip Shauibu

The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached the Deputy Governor of the State, Comrade Philip Shuaibu following the adoption of the recommendation of the 7-man judicial panel of inquiry led by retired Justice Stephen Omonua.
The Majority Leader of the House, Hon.Charity Aiguobarueghian duringbthe plenary session said that the report of the 7-man judicial panel of inquiry had two findings and one recommendation.
According to him, the report of the panel was unable to establish the case of perjury levelled against the deputy governor, but found him guilty of disclosure of government secrets.
According to him, the judicial panel of inquiry recommended that the deputy governor be impeached on the ground of disclosure of government secrets.
Clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Omogbai who conducted a head count of the lawmakers said that 2/3 (16 24) members of the House were needed to carry out the impeachment.
At the end of the head count, of the 19 lawmakers present at plenary, 18 lawmakers voted for his impeachment while one voted against.
The assembly thereafter upheld and approved the impeachment of the deputy governor.
Reacting, Shaibu said the impeachment is an illegal one based on trump up charges.
He said the allegations against him were meant to placade the public, saying that his ordeal is as a result of his political ambition.
According to him, the impeachment is a descent to dictatorship and a threat to the foundation of the nation's democracy.
He said he would not be deterred by the actions of detractors and however assured Edo people that he would challenge his impeachment in the law court
Meanwhile, a new deputy governor has been sworn in.
He is Omobayo Marvellous Godwins.
Omobayo was born on July 19, 1986 and hails from Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the State.
He holds a B.Engr. Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Msc in Public Administration from the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
