2% of 36 million Nigerians household use LPG, says consultant

BENIN CITY - The Oil Sustainability Programme (OSP), an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources has commenced an awareness campaign on the use of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Speaking during the flag-off of the awareness campaign, a consultant with the OSP, Mrs. Brenda Enose Ataga expressed reservations that out of the 36 million households in Nigeria, only two percent use LPG in the country.
She said that the campaign is meant to increase the domestic use of LPG because of its comparative advantages over other sources of cooking.
According to her, the use of clean cooking gas guarantees a safe, clean and healthy environment because it enhances forest conservation.
"With the awareness campaign, it is believed that the number of those using LPG in the country will increase astronomically while cost will be saved," she noted
In his opening remarks, Chairman, Senate Committee on Gas, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, said the initiative to promote the use of LPG as a clean cooking fuel through the Oil for Sustainability Programme, is commendable and aligns perfectly with the federal government's commitment to environmental stewardship and energy sustainability.
Senator Jarigbe who was represented by Mr. Joseph Ulom, added that the awareness programme holds immense potential to empower communities with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed choices for a cleaner, healthier future.
He said that by advocating for the adoption of LPG, they are not only promoting sustainable energy practices, but also contributing to improving air quality and enhancing public health.
On his part, a Snr Consultant, OSP, Dr. Gasem Mohammed said, the that the use of clean cooking gas is achievable in Nigeria.
