BENIN CITY - The Chairmanship Candidates on the platform of Labour Party (LP) in the September 2, 2023 Local Government election in Edo State have decried what they described as denial of access to Certified True Copy (CTC) of the December 29, 2023 judgement of the Local Government Election Petition Tribunal.

The candidates, Kennedy Oriakhi, Mashado Eghaghe, Oshobor Joachim and Onagise Daniel-Ero. for Egor, Ikpoba Okha, Etsako East and Oredo Local Government Area respectively said that they have 30 days within which to appeal the tribunal judgement

At a press briefing in Benin City, they said that the denial is a calculated attempt to frustrate their plans to appeal the judgement of the tribunal.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Kennedy Oriakhi said that since December 29, 2023 when the judgement was delivered by the Local Government Election Petition Tribunal, the Certified True Copy of the judgement has not been released to them enable appeal the judgement

Mr. Oriakhi who explained that they have approached the tribunal on several occasions without success, lamented that the judicial system has failed the society hence, this type of situation faced by the people.

His counterparts in Ikpoba-Okha, Egor and Oredo Local Government Areas, Mr. Mashado Eghaghe and others noted that when errors of sort are unchecked, they become norms which destroy democratic principles and endanger the judiciary, thereby robbing the poor of justice.

They described as unfortunate, a situation where the judiciary which is supposed to be the last hope of the common man is now the agent of delayed justice.

According to them, the delay in making the CTC available to them by the tribunal is a calculated attempt by the tribunal to thwart their chance of reclaiming their mandate in the election which is believed was highly marred by irregularities.

"We therefore appealed to the Election Petition Tribunal to expedite action and make the CTC available to us on time to enable us file our appeal" they pleaded.

Reacting to the concerns raised, the Secretary of the Local Government Election Petition Tribunal, Mr. Emmanuel Uwagboe said that the
tribunal is working on it assiduously to ensure that copies are made available to the parties next week.
